It's too late to Apologize?

So New Jersey is proposing to put forth an official apology for slavery. They will be the first northern state to do such (and reportedly the largest northern state to have slaves). However, Republican Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll says nay to that. I highlighted the “thought provoking” parts in red. See below: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/01/01/america/NA-GEN-US-Slavery-Apology.php

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey would become the first Northern state and the fifth state overall to apologize for slavery under a measure to be considered this week by state lawmakers.
Legislators in Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia have issued formal apologies.
"If former Confederate states can take action like this, why can't a Northeast state like New Jersey?" asked Payne, a Democrat from Essex.
But Republican lawmakers wonder if it would be relevant.
"Who living today is guilty of slave-holding and thus capable of apologizing for the offense?" asked Assemblyman Richard Merkt, a Morris Republican. "And who living today is a former slave and thus capable of accepting the apology? So how is a real apology even remotely possible, much less meaningful, given the long absence of both oppressor and victim?"
But Payne, an Essex Democrat, said an apology would comfort black residents and set an example for other states. "Slavery was an evil and shameful practice and New Jersey should profess remorse for its past involvement," he said.
The measure is set for a hearing tomorrow. It hasn't received Senate consideration but would have to be adopted by Tuesday, when the legislative session expires.
It's proposed as a resolution, a form used to express the Legislature's opinion and requiring no gubernatorial action.
Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll, a Morris Republican, said Democrats should start by asking their own party to apologize, noting the historic Republican opposition to slavery and how New Jersey twice voted against Lincoln.
"But, on a current note, if slavery was the price that a modern American's ancestors had to pay in order to make one an American, one should get down on one's knees every single day and thank the Lord that such price was
paid," Carroll said. He said his ancestors came from Ireland around the 1850s, fleeing the potato famine he said was worsened by British indifference.
"Far from holding it against the modern British, I delight in the cruelty of their forebears. Without same, I might be hanging around in Inisfree," Carroll said, referencing an Irish island.
History "is not something for which anyone can — or should be expected to — atone," said Carroll.
"To the extent that America — or New Jersey — ever owed any kind of debt to anyone, that debt was more than repaid through the blood and suffering of 650,000 federal soldiers who died or were wounded during the war provoked by slavery," Carroll said, referring to the Union Army's losses in the Civil War, which pitted the North against the Confederate South between 1861-1865.
"No one today need feel the slightest guilt, as no one today participated in the wrong."

New Jersey has 8.7 million residents, 14.5 percent of them black.
According to the proposal, New Jersey had one of the largest slave populations in the northern colonies, was the last Northern state to free slaves and was the last Northeast state to abolish slavery, doing so in 1846.
It also allowed authorities to return runaway slaves to their owners and didn't ratify the amendment prohibiting slavery until January 1866, a bit more than a month after its passage, after rejecting it in 1865.
"It's a disgraceful part of our state's history," said Payne. But Merkt said many residents descend from families who came to America after the Civil War and have no link to slave-holding.

"Today's residents of New Jersey, even those who can trace their ancestry back to either slaves or slave-holders, bear no collective guilt or responsibility for unjust events in which they personally played no role," Merkt said.
The proposed resolution expresses "profound regret for the state's role in slavery and apologizes for the wrongs inflicted by slavery and its aftereffects in the United States of America."
It states that in New Jersey, "the vestiges of slavery are ever before African-American citizens, from the overt racism of hate groups to the subtle racism encountered when requesting health care, transacting business, buying a home, seeking quality public education and college admission, and enduring pretextual traffic stops and other indignities."

So I wonder- Do we deserve an apology like other groups? And if we did, what would that do for us? It’s coming from people who weren’t involved although benefited from it. Would it even be sincere at this point, after all no one now has enslaved anyone? Also, do we deserve reparations? Sorry if I offend anyone but if we gave every ancestor of slavery 40 acres and a mule or the financial equivalent what would that do? Half the people wouldn’t even spend it on things to improve themselves and their children and put real wealth into our community. Would a program geared at helping underprivileged black people find financial empowerment be better? And unlike what fellow former law student said in class a few years back- Welfare is NOT a form of reparations- please open a book and read up on it!

Let’s face it, call it how you like, the United States, Paris, England etc. have slavery to thank for being suck super powers. Perhaps if they had not grabbed people from their homelands and enslaved them or “colonized” their countries, they might be facing the same type of turmoil many African countries are now seeing and the plights that many African Americans are now stuck in. It’s not as if Europeans never went to war against their own or enslaved their own (although treated them much better than African slaves), so its not a far reaching assumption.

Finally, should we be on our knees thanking God for slavery? If not, we might be running from the many atrocities imposed on the many African citizens. But then again, what might Africa look like if there was no European influence? Should we just forget this whole horrific incident and leave it in the past? Should the Native Americans, Jews, and Japanese forced to be internment camps (mind you they got an apology and money) also forget? Was the fact that so many soldiers died in the Civil War an equal price (personally, I think hell no, this is far from an eye for an eye situation, killing, in my opinion never makes the world right and Mr. Carrolls statements only show how simple minded he really is)?

I wouldn't have used the same words but the sentiment is exactly what I would have written here had that quote not been in your post.

What's the point of apologizing? I wasn't a slave. Anyone apologizing never held slaves. The whole thing is moot. It's not even a nice gesture. Is it going to eradicate racism? No. will it ameliorate the sad state that the Black community is in? No. I think there are better issues that can be tackled. Standing up and saying, "I'm sorry" when you know that you personally had nothing to do with the transgression is lame and disingenuous.

I totally agree but it is so hard for "us" to hear. We still want vindication. But if that never comes- then what? I think we need to acknowledge the injustice and try to come up out of it for the better instead of stewing in it.

YFNS, I totally agree. Save the apology, especially since an apology isn't going to do jack squat in terms of alleviating racial disparities. As a former resident, NJ lawmakers how about you spend your time trying to address inequalities in health, education, etc instead of drafting meaningless letters.

As for thanking the lord for slavery? Is homeboy effing serious?

*shaking head in disgust*

Oh man, I don't think I need to say anymore. Thanks for having the courage to speak the truth, even when some might not want to hear it. Many people would NOT use reparations wisely. How many times have you driven past a less-affluent neighborhood and seen Escalades on 26-inch rims that spin from Memorial Day to Thanksgiving without taking a break? It's sad, to say the least.

Worse yet, it reflects poorly on those who would (and do) use the system as intended -- a means by which to get a good foothold in life and get OUT of that situation (not to PERPETUATE it). Anyone who is content with that brand of mediocrity doesn't deserve anything but 40 acres of mule dung.

Richard Merkt Morris is a pompous self righteous jackass SOB as only a Godless idiot white supremacist would make such asinine remark. Remarks like his are just another reason why the majority of Blacks do not vote for Republicans. This jerk just doesn't get it!!! Its not merely about whether or not the people who instituted, participated or were direct recipients of the slavery market are alive today, its the ramifications slavery left on the lives of Black people and their psychic. Slavery wasn't just an abominable atrocity, it was the state of mind which allowed one race of people to feel they were superior and the supreme God of another people. It was that ill conceived state of mind which galvanized white folk to feel they had the inherent right to institutionalize another race of people and inflict innumerable savage atrocities and the mental and physical harm which ensued for years to come. It was that very same racist superior state of mind inherent in your generations thereby inincorporated within every institution in the U.S. which abominably affected blacks for generations!

The fact that white people like Assemblyman Richard Merkt want to claim they were not directly responsible for such Barbaric, Atrocious, Savage, inhumane acts against an innocent people which indisputably has no validity in the Bible nor in reality of Black Folks lives. For those very same Bibles that most of these hypocrite politicians pro port to sit in church every Sunday and read, proclaiming their religious beliefs to the world, professing to believe in "God"...those very same Bibles which a 12 year old child could comprehend, tell us that.....We are responsible for the Sins of our Forefathers. That very same Bible also tells us that the Esau/Edomites/Whites live in their own "Vainness" which even those of the lowest common sense can comprehend. For it is written that 'You should pray for the sins of your forefathers as you Will Not be Held Blameless!!!

It is also written throughout those very same Bibles, these politicians profess to believe in "The sins of the father shall be visited upon the son" "For the Seed of Generations to come" "Even up to the 4th and 5th Generation" Whether or not these Godless politicians believe in the very same Bible they've touted and professed to the world to believe in for generations, only they themselves and the Father above truly knows. The fact remains that the blood of your forefathers runs through your lineage, therefore White people of this generation are just as responsible for what their forefathers did as if they committed these Savage, Inhumane, Barbaric acts directly themselves. The fact remains that the majority of Blacks undoubtedly hold whites responsible for their suffering and having to bear the brunt of your racist, superior attitude and actions, whether committed directly or indirectly you should not be in doubt as Blacks have yet to be compensated for the genocide on their lives and the lives of their loved ones, whether it be their parents, grandparents or great grandparents, the fact remains that Racism exists in White America and has abominably affected the lives of Blacks, the lives of their children past, and children to come which has been a harsh dose of reality for far too many generations!!

Or maybe this Jackass Republican Merkt feels "Oh Well, So What if your great grandparents died or suffered from the ramifications of slavery or the generations afterward suffered in poverty bearing the brunt of your racist economic and social systems long after slavery was abolished....As long as the majority of Black Folk today are alive and living ' the lap of luxury' in a non-racist, libertarian, Equal Justice for All in American Society! Thus should be happy and tell all Whites "Thank Ya Massa!!!!! for bringing us out of slavery to become slaves within your racist institutions equating prejudice, bigotry and racism with your national emblem failing to understand that Freedom, Liberty and Justice belong to All !!!

Many blacks will never know their ancestry, their financial inheritance, nor the love and wisdom passed down from their great grandparents and black ancestors. Many blacks will never be able to trace their genuine roots, many blacks will never have the luxury of living that "Rich Off Black Slavery" financial security passed down from generations within the realm of their families. What Blacks today have undoubtedly inherited is the emotional and psychological baggage of a legacy passed down from generations knowing their great grandparents, Black forefathers and ancestors died from unspeakable, savage, barbaric, inhumane acts committed by whites...merely because of the 'Color of their Skin'

Yet Mr. Merkt in his jackassdom sits in his senate office today, having the audacity to tell All Blacks that
' Since He did not personally commit any of these Barbaric Savage Acts upon Blacks, He does not bare any Responsibility' Well correct some of us if we are wrong, but the name "Merkt" sounds "Jewish" maybe its time some of you Black folk start digging a little deeper into what role these "Jews" played during the time when Blacks were enslaved and just how many decades they have held those responsible for the atrocities committed against them as "Guilty"

PKAI,

"Barbaric, Atrocious, Savage, inhumane acts against an innocent people which indisputably has no validity in the Bible"

Are you kidding me? You've got to be kidding.

First off, No, the Bible does condone hanging your slaves from trees, or shooting them, or raping them but it does condone one thing...HAVING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE! Not only does the "Good Book" accept slavery, but it aslso gives guidelines as to how to discipline slaves.

"When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. " Exodus 21: 20-21

I'm sorry, but I would be under the impression that an "all-loving" god would at least stipulate that no human should enslave another. I can't "covet my neighbor's wife" but I can own a slaves and treat them as property?

Secondly, that "sins of the father" stuff is asinine as well. If we are all sinners that means that inherently we are all destined to be punished. Following this logic if we are responsible for the sins of our ancestors then why are blacks disenfranchised when we did no wrong in this matter.

There is no point in trying to apply the supernatural to what is, at best, an issue of ideology. Racism doesn't exist JUST because of whites, blame can be spread to both sides. Racism in part is spread the same way hereditary traits are, from previous generations. We are all born with a clean slate, no child is born racist. It is taught/learned. The sooner we stop pointing the finger at white people and saying, "It's their fault" and realize that we have work to do as well, the better we'll all be.

P.S. Don't claim that someone is "Godless" just because their interpretation of the Bible doesn't jive with yours. I would think the "Word of God" would be written in a manner that would be clear to everyone.

P.P.S. Merkt sounds Jewish? Well "Jackson" sounds black. Last time I checked Phil Jackson is white.
